The competition is over

Thu Sep 10, 2009, 12:30 AM
The WorldSkills 2009 competition was held last week, from wednesday to saturday. I had some bad problems with starch (they gave me potato starch instead of corn, so you can just imagine what my creme patissiere looked like...), and in the end I had to improvize two of my small cakes and do them without starch. I still hope I could've done just what I planned, but you can't always win. Austria and Italy took the gold, and Korea got bronze (there was no silver because of the shared gold). I was 8th (14 competitors total), got 500 points exactly which means that I got the medallion of excellence. Even though I wasn't on the best places, I'm still extremely happy as there were still France, Belgium and Japan behind me and those countries have always sent really high-level competitors.

So I added some stuff from last spring and summer, unfortunately I didn't have really good photos of my small cakes or marzipan figures from the competition. This whole competition project, that took about a year, is over, and now I'm trying to figure out what the term "normal life" means.

And I'm super jetlagged and I might have the swine flu.

Thank you for the fave. Absolutely love your work, you told me that you'd like to make a centrepiece......you already have, your show piece is just that.. You have the skills, it's finding an idea that nobody has thought of.

Cheers

Well, I know I can do more than most of the people, but it's just not world-level yet :P Guess that will take years, only little tiny thing is that I'm competing again in February and haven't had any possibilities to practise yet :/. If my idea works, it should be good, though.
:iconraynich2:
That's it practice, the key word. When I was in the Army I was entered into the Salon Culinaire/Hotelympia in London in the Pastillage Grand Pieces class. As there are competitors from all over the world I had to think out of the box to be original. With one week to go I was panicking, then I was walking past a music shop and saw a violin in the window...they loaned me it, and I produced the same in Pastillage with full-size orchids trailing off it. I didn't think I stood a chance, I won best in class and best in show, I couldn't beleive it. One of the judges said afterwards that most of these exhibits are mainly 'samey', it was the originality that did it. Sorry to rattle on, I'm just saying, don't despair...you have the skill, just think out of the box.
